A Salute to Future Human

Dear readers,

It’s with a heavy heart that I must announce that today is my last day as editor of Future Human.

I dreamt of launching this publication for many years — specifically, a site that covered science, technology, and climate with an eye toward the shifting future and a focus on the people who are most vulnerable to the changes ahead. Future Human is unique in that regard, and I’m so grateful to my team for bringing that vision to life.

This site was built on the incomparable work of staff writers Drew Costley and Emily Mullin as well as writing from a host of top-notch freelance writers who shared their valuable time and ideas. I must also thank Damon Beres, the editor-in-chief of our parent site OneZero, and the talented and generous editors and producers on staff — Megan Morrone, Sarah Kessler, Brian Merchant, Michael Zelenko, and Rachel Kalson — who made the stories sing.

The past year has shown us how quickly things can change. Pandemics start, vaccination stalls, racism spreads, wildfires scorch, and companies change direction. But at the same time, we’ve seen movements rise, vaccines emerge, and voters turn out in droves. If there’s anything you take away from Future Human, I hope it’s an appreciation for the ability of our species to withstand change and, on the flip side, create it.

Here’s hoping that Future Humans will use that power for good.
